BOSTON DISTRICT 1 CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE FORUM: ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

On April 4, the Environmental League of Massachusetts, GreenRoots, and the East Boston-based PUEBLO coalition held a virtual Candidate Forum on Environmental Justice with the two women competing to represent Boston District 1 on City Council. This seat represents the residents of East Boston, Charlestown, and the North End at City Hall, and was recently vacated by now-State Senator Lydia Edwards. Both candidates, Gabriela Coletta and Tania Del Rio, joined us and responded to crucial questions related to environmental justice impacting the district.

The Boston neighborhoods that make up the 1st District are overburdened and underserved, as sea-level rise causes frequent flooding and dangerous pollution poisons the air. Voters deserve the opportunity to hear their candidates for local office detail their plans to combat the impending climate crisis.

We must elect officials who understand and prioritize building a thriving, green, and equitable community. How our elected officials plan to manage our climate and environmental challenges and protect the most vulnerable and historically overburdened among their constituents must be a top issue in every campaign.
