Former EEA Secretary Katie Theoharides Brings Political and Climate Expertise to Environmental League of Massachusetts Board of Directors
Former Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs and current Head of Offshore Development (East) at RWE Renewables Katie Theoharides is lending her passion and expertise for strong climate and environmental policy to the Environmental League of Massachusetts as the newest member of their Board of Directors.
Theoharides was a champion for increased renewable energy resources and setting ambitious climate goals as the Secretary of EEA. She brings her strategic thinking and wealth of subject–matter expertise to her new role at RWE Renewables and to the ELM Board.
“I have great respect for the mission and vision of the Environmental League of Massachusetts,” said Theoharides. “As a member of the Board of Directors, I look forward to continuing to push Massachusetts to implement bold and practical climate policy solutions that will achieve our emissions reduction mandates here in the Commonwealth, but also importantly help inform development and implementation of climate solutions around the world.”
“Secretary Theoharides has both a deep passion for our work and incredibly relevant experience,” said ELM President Elizabeth Henry. “She will be an integral part of our work to push the state to act with the urgency the climate crisis requires. As a crucial architect of the last two major climate bills and the Clean Energy and Climate Plan, she will hit the ground running as a member of the ELM team to ensure they are implemented effectively, and we continue to boldly lead the nation.”
Theoharides has a track record of building consensus and getting results. She successfully guided the Commonwealth through the creation of the Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2025 and 2030, holding listening sessions and incorporating feedback from concerned citizens and impacted residents. She balanced priorities and negotiated multiple major climate bills through the legislative processes. Offshore wind will be the workhorse of Massachusetts’s decarbonization strategy in coming years, and Theoharides’s knowledge and expertise of the industry and the political landscape in the region makes her a valuable advocate.
In her role as an ELM board member, Theoharides will continue to push for strategic policy and its implementation, making progress on the landmark policies she has worked on over the years. As the Commonwealth moves toward decarbonization, invests in nation leading solutions, and increases renewable energy resources, ELM is honored for her to join.
