Vineyard Wind, the country’s largest offshore wind project, is now fully operational about 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. With 62 turbines capable of generating 800 megawatts of electricity, the project will provide enough power for approximately 400,000 homes.
The milestone comes just one day after Revolution Wind, another major offshore wind project serving Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, reached full power with the capacity to generate enough electricity for approximately 350,000 homes.
ELM helped pave the way for offshore wind in Massachusetts by championing the landmark 2016 Energy Diversity Act, which helped make projects like Vineyard Wind 1 possible.
“New England is better off now that we have not one but TWO fully commercially operational projects,” said Katie Segal, ELM’s Senior Director of Offshore Wind. “We are in for a difficult winter and wind will help with costs and reliability.”
In an interview with WBUR, Segal highlighted the importance of having both projects fully operational, noting that offshore wind will help strengthen New England’s energy supply, improve reliability and provide cost benefits as the region heads into winter.
