Environmental Alliances & Coalitions

ELM works with a wide range of nonprofit, corporate, and government partners to protect the Massachusetts environment.

Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance

As a member of the Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance, ELM joins with housing, community development, planning, and conservation groups, as well as other interested citizens and organizations in our commonwealth. Nationally, the SGA has a collective membership in the thousands. In Massachusetts, our Smart Growth Alliance partners are:

  • Boston Society of Architects (BSA)
  • Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA)
  • Conservation Law Foundation (CLF)
  • Fair Housing Center of Greater Boston (FHCGB)
  • MA Association of Community Development Corporations (MACDC)
  • Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC)

Our objectives include improving development conception and planning, preserving our heritage resources, expanding choices in housing and transportation for residents of all incomes, seeking ways to make urban living healthier and more attractive, and seeking ways to balance our needs for new development with our needs to sustain and improve our environment.

MSGA Great Neighborhoods Program
We all want vibrant, healthy neighborhoods with a transportation system that gets us where we want to go, a choice of homes we can afford, services we need and recreation we want, and a place where our opinions are heard, but how can we create more of these places in Metro Boston?

The Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance (MSGA) is kicking off its new Great Neighborhoods program, which will help Metro Boston create more communities that are affordable, diverse, walkable, and have a high quality of life.

The MSGA wants to use its strengths to help local partners advance their projects.  The range of support we include: strategic and technical assistance, information resources, help in managing local campaigns, access to funding, legal guidance, model by-laws, examples of best practices, and access to MSGA's network of staff and supporters.  We are accepting Letters of Interest about opportunities in your community for which you might be interested in partnering. More information on the Letter of Interest, and guidelines for submitting a letter can be obtained by contacting andre@ma-smartgrowth.org This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. ELM is the Massachusetts Affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). ELM works closely with NWF on a variety of issues, including efforts to combat climate change and to protect wildlife. ELM is currently partnering with NWF to help ensure passage of national climate change legislation. NWF and ELM are advocating for a cap-and-trade emissions trading program that will generate new funding for wildlife protection by the states.

Teaming with Wildlife

We are pleased to be an affiliate member of the National Wildlife Federations' Teaming with Wildlife initiative, a coalition of more than 5,000 organizations nationally that are working to prevent wildlife from becoming endangered. The TWW coalition supports wildlife conservation, wildlife-related recreation, and conservation education.

Taunton River Watershed Alliance

ELM participates in joint efforts to focus attention on specific issues or areas of interest that have significant environmental importance.

As a member of TRWA’s campaign, ELM works with nine other groups dedicated to protecting and restoring the natural resources of the watershed and helping its communities plan for sustainable growth.

A Wild and Scenic River
The Taunton River was designated as a “Wild and Scenic River” by a bill that passed the US Congress (House, 2008; Senate, 2009) and was signed into law in March, 2009 by President Obama. The federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act requires that rivers within the system be preserved in free-flowing condition and managed to protect and enhance their outstanding values.
